Situation
African retail runs on fragmented, unreliable infrastructure. Merchants juggle separate POS systems, ecommerce platforms, and manual inventory with no unified view. The company had no engineering organisation, no infrastructure, and no production system to build from.
Task
Build the entire engineering organisation and technical foundation from scratch: the platform, the infrastructure, the team, and eventually the AI layer that would make it commercially defensible.
Action
- Scaled engineering from 0 to 20 across 3 product teams, designing career ladders, hiring rubrics, and quarterly planning cycles that sustained 90%+ engineering retention
- Architected and built a multi-tenant commerce operating system on Node.js/Express + PostgreSQL serving 1,500+ merchants with storefronts, product catalogs, full order lifecycle, customer CRM, and role-based team access. The platform processes 4,000+ events daily across the full stack.
- Built applied AI agent orchestration on AWS Bedrock with five domain agents (inventory, demand, orders, cost, pricing) with per-tenant pgvector RAG retrieval and DynamoDB-backed cross-session memory, preventing €120K/quarter in overstock losses
- Deployed multi-region production infrastructure using Terraform across 2 geographic regions (EU and Nigeria) with Route 53 latency-based routing, EKS managed node groups with spot-instance autoscaling, and RDS Multi-AZ PostgreSQL
- Built demand forecasting ML pipeline using Holt-Winters time-series models with BullMQ job orchestration and CloudWatch custom metrics, surfacing actionable inventory predictions across 1,500+ merchants
- Built a 17-microservice automotive services marketplace across 3 API gateways, with Azure OpenAI-powered AI assistance, Azure Service Bus eventing, and Paystack payment processing. Customers are served across React Native mobile and Next.js web portals.
- Maintained 99.9% uptime on core transaction paths by architecting a multi-tenant real-time event pipeline ingesting 4,000+ events/day
- Improved p95 response latency by 60% through systematic profiling and a structured phased rollout strategy across migrated services
